INTERESTING FACTS & INFORMATION:

When you arrive, ask for a “L’ALPE” trail map which illustrates everything that there is to see in the area: ancient villages, forest trails, interesting areas of natural beauty, etc.

Chestnuts

It is believed that forests of chestnut trees have existed in the area since prehistoric times. They were well-established for agricultural purposes by the time of the reign of the Countess Matilde di Canossa (in approx. the year 1100 a.d.). In the past, because of their excellent nutritional properties, chestnuts were an important part of the traditional diet.

Chestnut flour contains 7 % lipids, 3 % fiber, a great quantity of sugar and starch which makes it similar in composition to flour from grains like corn and wheat.

The Chestnut Harvest Season begins in mid-October and our guests have free access to the surrounding chestnut forests. There is no weight limit for the amount of chestnuts that can be collected.

Mushrooms

There is a wide variety of wild mushrooms in the area. The prized "Porcino" (Boletus edulis) can be found in hard-wood and pine forests during the summer. Other types are: "Russole", "Prugnolo" (Clitopilus prunulus), "Galletto", "Vescia" (Bovista plumbea), Mazza da tamburo (Lepiota procera) as well as many others, including non-edible types.

Medieval Villages

There are many quaint medieval villages in the area that can be reached either on foot or by car. Each place has unique characteristics that make a visit worthwhile. Some of the most interesting ones are:

The tiny village of La Scola is the most well-preserved in the Bolognese Appennines and is famous for its monumental cypress trees (more than 630 years old).

Chiapporato, an isolated 17th Century village which is partially in ruins, is a particularly fascinating place of harmony and beauty. The silence of the streets, the fountain, the hand-hewn stone wash basin, the village oven, the church and cemetery create an atmosphere where time seems to have stood still.

Stagno, because of its strategic position on the border between the regions of Emilia-Romagna and Tuscany, was the object of ferocious battles during Medieval times between the Bolognesi and Pistoiesi.

Bocca di Rio ("Mouth of the Stream") is the second most important religious sanctuary in the archdiocese of Bologna.
